Interview Skills - Preparing for that Job
Where do we begin:
Locating employers
Sending out resumes
Setting up interviews
Its all part of finding that job
What are your goals?
What kind of a job are you looking for
What do you see yourself doing (visualise this)
What is your reason for applying for this type of job
What can you contribute to this job and get out of this job?
Your previouse experience
What previous work experience do you have
Even take a look at your interest and hobbies (What do you love doing)
When people have paid you a compliment - think about what they have said you are a natural at
How did you education prepare you for this job?
What are your special skills
What skills do you have (Do a mind map - go to Tips for Advice on Mind Mapping)
Create for yourself a portfolio of the work that you have done over the years (Neatly in a file)
Put together letters of recomendation, cards from employers notes of praise or congratualtions on work well done etc
What is important to you
What Motivates you
What do you enjoy doing
Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses - they are going to ask you at the interview what they are.
Sometimes our weaknessess can also be a strength and visa versa
Write down - Questions - what do you want to ask them - dont let the interview be one sided - it shows you are prepared
Use your emotional intelligence when it comes to timing and asking questions - listen first - respond and then ask questions
Be Prepared
Arrive on time (Or a little early - NOT too early)
Listen carefully to the interviewer
Respond as clearly and to the point as possible (DONT talk yourself out of a job)
Do breathing excercises to relax before the interview - dont become too relaxed as you need to alert to questions
Dress very professionally, neat and tidy, no marks on clothing, no laders in stockings, shoes polished and clean
These might be obvious pointers to some (However we have found that it's not the case with everyone)
Research the company you are coming to meet with (look them up on the internet - find out their values, goals - products etc)
Print out the address, number of building, name of building - floor number - room number - parent company - phone no - contact person
What does the company structure look like
Bring an extra copy of your cv with in a neat folder
Bring along a note book and pen
Smile, show enthusiasm
Be confident and positive
Shake hands - maintain good eye contact
Body language - shoulders back, head up - neat dress - smile - sitting up straight (All go along way to making a positive impression)
Speak clearly and slowly making yourself heard
When the interview is over - thank the person and leave
What to do with your hands - don't fiddle with fingers - keep them in your lap - keep them still.
What to do with your hair, keep your hair neat, clean and out of your face - don't let that fringe hang over the eyes.
